Grace’s Journey to Teaching

Grace was on the verge of dropping out of school due to family pressure and lack of confidence. Through TPWI’s mentorship program, she connected with a mentor who visited her school monthly, providing encouragement and guidance. Today, Grace is excelling in her studies and dreams of becoming a teacher to inspire other girls in her community. Her transformation shows how mentorship can change the trajectory of a young girl’s life.

Women’s Voices in Policy

In partnership with Kajiado County Government, TPWI facilitated a series of policy dialogues where pastoralist women shared their challenges and solutions. For the first time, these women’s voices were heard at the county level. Their input led to the inclusion of women-focused provisions in the county’s development plan, ensuring resources are allocated to address their specific needs. This collaboration demonstrates the power of advocacy and inclusive governance.

Greening Our Communities

TPWI organized a community tree-planting campaign that brought together women, youth, and children. Over 300 trees were planted across the region, creating shade, improving air quality, and raising awareness about environmental conservation. Participants learned about climate change and sustainable practices. The campaign sparked a movement, with community members continuing to plant trees and protect their environment.

Maternal Health Awareness

Many women in pastoralist communities lacked access to information about maternal and reproductive health. TPWI conducted health forums in collaboration with local health workers, reaching over 100 women. These forums covered prenatal care, safe delivery practices, and reproductive health rights. Women reported increased confidence in seeking healthcare services and making informed decisions about their health. This initiative has reduced health risks and improved maternal outcomes.

Breaking the Silence on FGM

TPWI facilitated sensitive community dialogues on harmful cultural practices, including female genital mutilation (FGM). Working with community elders, women leaders, and youth, these conversations created a safe space to discuss alternatives and the negative health impacts of FGM. Several families publicly pledged to protect their daughters from the practice. This courageous work is gradually shifting attitudes in communities where FGM has been practiced for generations.

Empowered Youth Leaders

A group of secondary school girls who participated in TPWI’s leadership workshops formed a peer mentorship club in their school. These young leaders now mentor younger students, organize study groups, and advocate for girls’ rights within their school community. They’ve become role models and change agents, proving that empowered youth can transform their own communities. Their club has grown from 10 members to over 50.

TPWI changed my life. I now believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
